ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Along COVID-19 pandemics, Rio de Janeiro (MRJ) has figured among the Brazilian cities with the highest mortality rates. In this study, we explored COVID-19 incidence and mortality in areas with a predominance of subnormal population clusters (SNC) in MRJ. We analyzed 36 neighborhoods of Canal do Cunha Sub-basin (CCSB) and the associations between demographic, socioeconomic, and epidemiological features, and the cumulative incidence, mortality, and lethality rates, and Moran's spatial statistics were performed. The incidence rate in CCSB neighborhoods was 621.5/10,000 inhabitants. Complexo do Alemão, Mangueira, and Maré had the highest proportions of cases and deaths. And the lowest incidence (33.6/10,000 inhabitants), mortality (8.3/10,000 inhabitants), but with the highest lethality rate (24.7%) was recorded in Complexo do Alemão. There was a negative correlation between mortality and the proportion of inhabitants in neighborhoods with ASN (rho= -0.433; p=0.023). In spatial statistics, there was an inverse correlation for the incidence (Moran index, -0.155863; p=0.02). It is concluded that incidence and mortality in SNC areas are significantly related to their sociodemographic structures, highlighting the need to strengthen the surveillance and control systems of COVID-19 in slums territories. Non-pharmacological recommendations and suitable Primary Health Care in slums areas play a relevant role in reducing viral transmission, mortality, and health inequities.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the differences of white matter diffusion properties between vulnerable and resistant individuals to continuous attention after sleep deprivation. Methods:According to the psychomotor vigilance test performance before and after sleep deprivation, the participants were divided into the vulnerable group( n=24) and resistant group( n=25). All participants underwent diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) scans.Tract based spatial statistics(TBSS) was used to compare fractional anisotropy(FA), mean diffusivity(MD), axial diffusivity(AD), radial diffusivity(RD) maps between the two groups.Spearman correlation analysis was conducted by SPSS 24.0 to investigate the relationships between the altered DTI metrics and PVT task performance. Results:(1) Compared with resistant group, FA value of vulnerable group decreased in the body of corpus callosum(x, y, z=-8, 9, 25, t=-7.855), right superior longitudinal fasciculus(x, y, z=-39, -7, 26, t=-6.252), bilateral anterior limb of internal capsule(x, y, z=-13, 8, 13, t=-5.235; x, y, z=12, 8, 3, t=-5.024) and right posterior thalamic radiation(x, y, z=-26, -56, 17, t=-5.469)(TFCE corrected, P<0.05, cluster size≥50 voxel). (2) Compared with resistant group, MD value of vulnerable group increased in the body of corpus callosum(x, y, z=-3, -6, 26, t=7.613), right superior longitudinal fasciculus(x, y, z=-31, -19, 38, t=5.314), bilateral anterior limb of internal capsule(x, y, z=-16, 7, 8, t=6.898; x, y, z=15, 5, 7, t=6.652), splenium of corpus callosum(x, y, z=27, -53, 17, t=6.541), and AD value increased in the right superior longitudinal fasciculus(x, y, z=-33, -19, 39, t=4.892), splenium of corpus callosum(x, y, z=-22, -49, 21, t=5.450), genu of corpus callosum(x, y, z=4, 26, 0, t=4.332), as well as RD value increased in the right superior corona radiata(x, y, z=-17, 1, 33, t=7.558), body of corpus callosum(x, y, z=4, -8, 26, t=6.699), right anterior limb of internal capsule(x, y, z=-12, 7, 3, t=5.212) (TFCE corrected, P<0.05, cluster size≥50 voxel). (3) Correlational analysis revealed that the negative correlations were found between PVT task performance and the FA value in the right superior longitudinal fasciculus( r=-0.492, P<0.001), right anterior limb of internal capsule( r=-0.510, P<0.001), right posterior thalamic radiation( r=-0.502, P<0.001) and body of corpus callosum( r=-0.464, P<0.001). The positive correlations were found between PVT task performance and the MD value in the body of corpus callosum( r=0.500, P<0.001), right superior longitudinal fasciculus( r=0.499, P<0.001), splenium of corpus callosum( r=0.462, P<0.001), right anterior limb of internal capsule( r=0.471, P<0.001), and AD value in right superior longitudinal fasciculus( r=0.643, P<0.001), as well as RD value in right superior corona radiate( r=0.498, P<0.001) (Bonferroni corrected, P<0.003). Conclusion:Differences in the microstructural characteristics of white matter fiber tracts in specific brain regions may constitute the potential neuropathological basis for the phenotypes of vulnerable and resistant individuals to continuous attention after sleep deprivation.

ABSTRACT

The study aims to investigate whether there is difference in pre-treatment white matter parameters in treatment-resistant and treatment-responsive schizophrenia. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was acquired from 60 first-episode drug-naïve schizophrenia (39 treatment-responsive and 21 treatment-resistant schizophrenia patients) and 69 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. Imaging data was preprocessed via FSL software, then diffusion parameters including fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD) and radial diffusivity (RD) were extracted. Besides, structural network matrix was constructed based on deterministic fiber tracking. The differences of diffusion parameters and topology attributes between three groups were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Compared with healthy controls, treatment-responsive schizophrenia showed altered white matter mainly in anterior thalamus radiation, splenium of corpus callosum, cingulum bundle as well as superior longitudinal fasciculus. While treatment-resistant schizophrenia patients showed white matter abnormalities in anterior thalamus radiation, cingulum bundle, fornix and pontine crossing tract relative to healthy controls. Treatment-resistant schizophrenia showed more severe white matter abnormalities in anterior thalamus radiation compared with treatment-responsive patients. There was no significant difference in white matter network topological attributes among the three groups. The performance of support vector machine (SVM) showed accuracy of 63.37% in separating the two patient subgroups ( = 0.04). In this study, we showed different patterns of white matter alterations in treatment-responsive and treatment-resistant schizophrenia compared with healthy controls before treatment, which may help guiding patient identification, targeted treatment and prognosis improvement at baseline drug-naïve state.

ABSTRACT

Objective Based on data related to arsenic contents in paddy rice,as part of the food safety monitoring programs in 2017,to discuss and explore the application of spatial analysis used for food safety risk assessment. Methods One province was chosen to study the spatial visualization, spatial point model estimation, and kernel density estimation.Moran's I statistic of spatial autocorrelation methods was used to analyze the spatial distribution at the county level. Results Data concerning the spatial point model estimation showed that the spatial distribution of pollution appeared relatively dispersive. From the kernel density estimation,we found that the hot spots of pollution were mainly located in the central and eastern regions. The global Moran's I values appeared as 0.11 which presented low spatial aggregation to the rice arsenic contamination and with statistically significant differences. One "high-high" and two typical "low-low" clustering were seen in this study. Conclusion Results from our study provided good visual demonstration, identification of pollution distribution rules, hot spots and aggregation areas for research on the distribution of food pollutants.Spatial statistics can provide technical support for the implementation of issue-based monitoring programs.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the microstructure abnormalities of white matter (WM) throughout the brain in patients with primary trigeminal neuralgia (PTN) using tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS). Methods: Whole brain DTI scanning was performed on 38 PTN patients and 38 age and sex matched healthy volunteers. DTI data were processed with FSL software package. The different brain regions of FA, mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD) and radial diffusivity (RD) were calculated, and then the correlation between these parameters and visual analogue scale (VAS) were evaluated in PTN patients. Results: Compared with the controls, widespread decrease of FA value in corpus callosum, coronal radiata, left superior longitudinal fasciculus, left inferior longitudinal fasciculus and inferior frontal-occipital fasciculus were demonstrated in PTN patients. Besides these regions, the elevated MD and RD values were also distributed extensively in posterior thalamic radiation, internal capsule, external capsule, fornix and right superior longitudinal fasciculus. Increased AD value was found in bilateral anterior limbs of internal capsule, left posterior limb of internal capsule, bilateral superior coronal radiata and superior longitudinal fasciculus. In addition, the mean VAS was negatively correlated with FA value (r=-0.502, P=0.001) and positively associated with MD value (r=0.437, P=0.006) in left superior longitudinal fasciculus in PTN patients. Conclusion: Elevation of MD and RD without FA alterations in thalamus and internal capsule may be relatively characteristic in PTN patient, and FA and MD values extracted from left superior longitudinal fasciculus may become alternative indicators for assessing facial pain in PTN patients.

ABSTRACT

@#Objective To explore the central pathogenesis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by comparing the difference between children with ASD and typically developing children. Methods From September, 2017 to July, 2018, ten children with ASD (ASD group) and ten typically developing children (control group) were included. ASD group was assessed with Gesell Developmental Schedules (GDS) and Psychoeducational Profile-Third Edition (PEP-3). All the children accepted diffusion tensor imaging, and the differences in fraction anisotropy (FA), axial diffusivity (AD), radial diffusivity (RD) and mean diffusivity (MD) between them were compared, and the correlation between abnormal data and the clinical scores was explored in ASD group. Results Compared with those in the control group, FA decreased in left middle cerebellar, left peduncle body of corpus callosum, left posterior limb of internal capsule, bilateral corona radiate and bilateral longitudinal fasciculus in ASD group; while RD increased in left middle cerebellar, left peduncle body and splenium of corpus callosum, bilateral corona radiata and bilateral longitudinal fasciculus. The mental age correlated with FA of left middle cerebellar (r = 0.686, P < 0.05), and the development quotient correlated with FA of left corona radiate (r = 0.720, P < 0.05) and left peduncle body of corpus callosum (r = 0.744, P < 0.05). The scores of Expressive Language (r = 0.711, P < 0.05) and Receptive Language (r = 0.754, P < 0.05) were correlated with FA of left peduncle body of corpus callosum, while the scores of Fine Motor were correlated with FA of left middle cerebellar (r = 0.723, P < 0.05). The scores of Affective Expression were correlated with RD of left peduncle body of corpus callosum (r = -0.902, P < 0.05). Conclusion There are developmental disorders of brain white matter in children with ASD, which may involve in mentality, development and clinical features.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES:to analyze the spatial patterns of Peruvian migration in the city of Cordoba, Argentina and to compare the Peruvian migrants in clusters with Peruvian migrants scattered in the city.METHODS:Spatial statistical techniques and socio-demographic analysis are used for this analysis. In the first phase, global measures of spatial autocorrelation (Global Moran Index) and local measures of spatial clustering represent clusters of population (Getis-Ord Gi*). In the second phase, a sociodemographic analysis of population in clusters and population dispersed is carried out.RESULTS:we suggest there are two entangled processes. First, the concentration in specific areas of the city of Peruvian migrants in patterns that are not random. Older migrants are mainly dispersed in the city while more recent migrants are concentrated. Second, dispersed Peruvian men have greater diversification in terms of occupational structure and better socioeconomic status than Peruvian migrants dispersed. Women both dispersed and in clusters have a more precarious economic situation than men. This situation is transversal to the dispersion / concentration in urban space.CONCLUSIONS: it is suggested that the composition of class, gender and temporality of migration flows articulate the modalities of incorporation in the society of destination.

ABSTRACT

Spatial statistics plays an important role in spatial epidemiology studies of echinococcosis .Spatial statistics can be used to describe the spatial distribution ,predict the prevalence ,identify disease clusters ,and analyze the influencing factors of echinococcosis .To describe spatial distribution and predict the prevalence ,we can use spatial interpolation ,empirical bayes smoothing and ellipsoidal gradient .Spatial autocorrelation always used to identify disease clusters .Moran's I value ,Getis'G val‐ue and spatial scan statistics are used to judge spatial autocorrelation .Molding plays an important role on analyzing risk factors of echinococcosis .Generalised linear mixed models and Bayesian model are always performed with both spatial factors ,such as geomorphologic features ,climatic characteristics ,vegetation index and factors which make great effect on disease transmission . To figure out the spatial distribution of echinococcosis is significant for echinococcosis control and prevention .

ABSTRACT

Purpose To observe white matter structure features of patients with early stage (Hoehn-Yahr 1-2 phase) Parkinson''s disease (PD) by using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) based on the fiber bundle analysis tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS); and to explore the brain regions of PD patients in which DTI parameters are significantly correlated with unified Parkinson''s disease rating scale (UPDRS) score elevation. Materials and Methods DTI sequence was performed on 27 cases of PD and 30 cases of healthy volunteers. DTI parameters including fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD), and radial diffusivity (RD) were analyzed in all participants by using TBSS technique, and the parameters of two groups were compared. The correlation of clinical UPDRS score with FA value, MD and RD value in the PD group were analyzed. Results Compared with that in the control group, FA values of several brain regions in PD group decreased, while MD and RD value increased (P0.05). UPDRS score of PD group was correlated with FA, MD and RD value (P=0.001). The brain regions that showed FA value decreased, MD and RD value increased included corpus callosum, left anterior limb of internal capsule, bilateral anterior radial crown, bilateral superior radial crown and left posterior thalamic radiation (P=0.001).Conclusion There is some changes in white matter structure of the patients with early stage Parkinson''s disease, which may due to demyelination or fiber integrity damaged.

ABSTRACT

Objective Diffusion tensor imaging(DTI)was used to explore the characteristics of white matter (WM)microstruc-ture lesion in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy(TLE)and hippocampal sclerosis(HS).Then we investigated the influence of the age of epilepsy onset and the course on WM changes. Methods DTI data were obtained in 30 TLE patients with HS and 23 age and sex-matched healthy controls.Thirteen patients had left HS (LHS)and seventeen had right HS (RHS).Between-group compari-sons of fractional anisotropy (FA)were carried out by using track-based spatial statistics (TBSS).In addition,FA in regions of in-terest (ROI)where white matter lesions had statistically significant difference was correlated with the age of onset and the course. Results Subjects in the LHS group,as compared to healthy controls, demonstrated these clusters of reduced FA:bilateral corona radiata, the left genu of corpus callosum, the right body and splenium of corpus callosum, the right posterior thalamic radiation,ex-ternal capsule and superior longitudinal fasciculus.White the subjects in the RHS group, the clusters of reduced FA are involving bi-lateral corpus callosum, corona radiata, posterior thalamic radiation, cingulum, superior longitudinal fasciculus, and the right ante-rior limb of internal capsule, the right retrolenticular part of internal capsule and external capsule. In LHS group, the FA of the left genu of corpus callosum was negatively correlated with the course, and the FA of the right anterior corona radiata was positively cor-related with the age of onset. In RHS group, the FA of the bilateral superior corona radiata was positively correlated with the course. Conclusion DTI detects extensive changes in TLE with HS that are not confined to temporal lobe. The age of epilepsy onset in LHS was correlated with the changes of anterior corona radiata, while the course and the WM change were not definitely linked to each other.

ABSTRACT

Brazilian beekeeping has been developed from the africanization of the honeybees and its high performance launches Brazil as one of the world´s largest honey producer. The Southeastern region has an expressive position in this market (45%), but the state of Rio de Janeiro is the smallest producer, despite presenting large areas of wild vegetation for honey production. In order to analyze the honey productivity in the state of Rio de Janeiro, this research used classic and spatial regression approaches. The data used in this study comprised the responses regarding beekeeping from 1418 beekeepers distributed throughout 72 counties of this state. The best statistical fit was a semiparametric spatial model. The proposed model could be used to estimate the annual honey yield per hive in regions and to detect production factors more related to beekeeping. Honey productivity was associated with the number of hives, wild swarm collection and losses in the apiaries. This paper highlights that the beekeeping sector needs support and help to elucidate the problems plaguing beekeepers, and the inclusion of spatial effects in the regression models is a useful tool in geographical data.

ABSTRACT

Background & objectives: The presence of efficient malaria vectors namely Anopeles culicifacies, An. fluviatilis and An. annularis (Diptera: Culicidae), rapid industrialization causing large influx of population and poor health infrastructure are some of the factors that make malaria an important public health problem in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand State, India. A geographical information system (GIS) based retrospective study using spatial statistical tools was initiated in 328 subcentres of 14 primary health centres (PHCs) of the district using malaria epidemiological data of three years (2007-2009) to identify spatial distribution pattern of Plasmodium vivax (Pv) and Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) occurrence, delineation of hot spots and to map directional distribution trend of Pf spread to help formulate evidence-based policy and to prioritize control during 2011. Methods: Spatial statistics tools like Global Moran's I index, Getis-Ord Gi* and Standard Deviational Ellipse were used in GIS domain for analysis. Results: Spatial distribution pattern of Pv occurrence was found random while Pf distribution was significantly clustered. During 2007-2009, the number of subcentres under Pf hot spot category exhibited downward trend while high Pf risk subcentres exhibited upward trend. One consistent Pf hot spot consisting of five subcentres was identified in Silli PHC. During 2009, one Pf hot spot consisting of 20 subcentres and 18 subcentres under high Pf risk category were identified in Angara, Silli, Burmu and Kanke PHCs. A shifting trend in Pf spread was noticed from north-west to western direction from 2008 onwards. Interpretation & conclusions: The study recommended priority control in 20 Pf hot spot and 18 high Pf risk reporting subcentres including five consistent Pf hot spot subcentres in Angara, Silli, Burmu and Kanke PHCs during 2011 to address grave malaria situation in the district in a cost-effective manner.

ABSTRACT

Spatial patterns of tropical trees and shrubs are important to understanding their interaction and the resultant structure of tropical rainforests. To assess this issue, we took advantage of previously collected data, on Neotropical tree and shrub stem identified to species and mapped for spatial coordinates in a 50ha plot, with a frequency of every five years and over a 20 year period. These stems data were first placed into four groups, regardless of species, depending on their location in the vertical strata of the rainforest (shrubs, understory trees, mid-sized trees, tall trees) and then used to generate aggregation patterns for each sampling year. We found shrubs and understory trees clumped at small spatial scales of a few meters for several of the years sampled. Alternatively, mid-sized trees and tall trees did not clump, nor did they show uniform (regular) patterns, during any sampling period. In general (1) groups found higher in the canopy did not show aggregation on the ground and (2) the spatial patterns of all four groups showed similarity among different sampling years, thereby supporting a “shifting mosaic” view of plant communities over large areas. Spatial analysis, such as this one, are critical to understanding and predicting tree spaces, tree-tree replacements and the Neotropical forest patterns, such as biodiversity and those needed for sustainability efforts, they produce.

ABSTRACT

A spatial analysis of the human and canine leptospirosis occurrence was performed in São Paulo city in 2007, associated with environmental risk variables such as flooding and rodent control sites. Clusters of flooding sites were found in 12 census sectors, and human leptospirosis in 4 census sectors, without correlation between them. Clusters of canine cases were not found, possibly due to lack of notification. The proportions of human cases in and out of rodent control areas were, respectively, 7:199,600 and 9:257,980. Rodent control measures minimized the effects of the risk factors in the leptospirosis transmission to humans.
